Because caking your face should not get you broke.
I really enjoy wearing makeup as often as possible. Some people don’t get this (I’m looking at you, every man ever) and they think makeup is purely a vanity thing. Us girls don’t need makeup, we know this, we’re not dumb. No matter what you say, makeup is something we enjoy. It makes us feel even more beautiful than we might feel without it. It gives us a confidence boost and makes us feel better about ourselves. But, it’s also just plain fun. We like playing around with different styles and trying new things, it’s a hobby to a lot of us.
There is one problem, which men are always quick to point out, and it’s that makeup is quite expensive. Ladies, there’s no way around it, we spend an awful lot on makeup throughout a year. I dread to think what my lifetime spending is sitting at…just…no, I’m not going to think about it!
Some of us will spend a lot more than others, but what if I let you in on a little secret; it doesn’t have to be this way. Yes, there are plenty of tips and tricks you can apply to save money and spend a lot less on makeup. What’s more, these tips will do nothing to hamper your beauty regime. In fact, they might just make it better and improve your looks!
So, enough waffling, how can you feel beautiful on a budget?
Less Is More
Okay, hands up if you’ve ever been guilty of maybe using a bit too much makeup than you should (I’m sheepishly raising my hand here!). We’ve all done it at some point, and there are some reasons behind this. The main one is that we see some blemishes on our skin and we get a little bit paranoid. So, we apply a thicker layer of foundation or concealer to ensure no one notices that giant spot on our skin. Also, sometimes, we simply get a little bit carried away as we put our makeup on. We’re trying to do something, and it’s not quite working, so we try and apply a little more to solve the problem. When this doesn’t work, we add a little more to rectify another problem we caused. Before we know it, we’ve used a good three times what we really should.
If you often find yourself running out of foundation – or any other type of makeup – ridiculously quickly, then this is probably your issue. Instead, try and use your makeup as sparingly as possible. Often, you’ll find this will just improve your look on the whole. You don’t end up overdoing it, and the effect is more subtle. Your makeup enhances your natural beauty, rather than creating a completely different face! For me, this is what makeup should be; it should help you highlight your best bits.
Don’t Depend On Makeup Too Much
One of the biggest mistakes we make is that we depend on makeup too much. This comes when you wear it almost every day, no matter what you’re doing. Even if you have to pop to the shop for five minutes, you do a full makeup routine. It becomes something we feel like we need to do whenever we have the possibility of being seen by someone we know. Of course, if you’re putting makeup on all the time, for every scenario, then you’re bound to run out quickly and need to spend a lot more money each year.
So, we need to work on kicking this dependency. It can be hard for a lot of girls out there with confidence issues that feel they need makeup or they’re anxious and stressed. The good idea is to take baby steps. Maybe start by reducing how much you wear when you’re not doing anything too special. If you’re just going to to the shop or having a lazy day with friends, wear minimal makeup. You’ll get used to seeing yourself without a lot on, and so will others. Slowly but surely you can reduce it even more until you don’t need to wear it at all in some situations. Then, you can save your makeup for proper occasions, make it last longer, and spend a lot less.
Buy Combination Palettes
This is a little trick I discovered while shopping for Christmas presents recently. I’m certain you’re all aware that there are various combination makeup palettes out there. As this link shows, you can buy things that combine things like eyeshadow, eyeliner, contour, blush, etc. all into one palette.
Now, on the face of things, these palettes often look quite expensive. But, think about how much you can actually save. You pay one price for something that combines loads of things into one simple palette. It stops you from going out and buying an eyeshadow palette, and eyeliner palette, a contour one, a highlighter one, and so on. When you add up how much each of these costs, I guarantee it will be more expensive! So, you can actually save money by getting a combination palette, and it also makes life easier as you don’t have to clog up your makeup bag with loads of products!
Think About Your Strengths & Weaknesses
No doubt everyone has certain elements of their face that they like more than others. Some of you might have naturally developed cheekbones that create a natural contour. Some might have eyebrows that are the perfect color and shape. Others might have big plump lips, and so on. When you have certain ‘strengths’, you can save money by not paying too much attention to them. For example, do you really need an expensive eyebrow kit if you’ve already got good eyebrows? They won’t need much attention, so put your purse away.
Likewise, think about your ‘weaknesses’. Do you feel like your cheeks don’t pop? If so, it makes sense to invest in a good contour. Everyone is different, we don’t all need to buy the same things to look good. Pick and choose what you need/don’t need, and it can save a lot of money.
These are my budget beauty tips that I thought I’d share with you all. If you feel like you’re spending too much money on your beauty routine, then this advice will help you look good for less!
